The number one thing both parents must absolutely do every single day is make time for their child(ren). No matter what you’re experiencing, don’t turn into a sporadic, undependable parent. For the non-custodial parent, this means at least a phone conversation every day if you don’t see them. Make sure you stay current with their activities at school, and after school. Attend all their games, and recitals, and help them with school projects. This also applies to the custodial parent as well: stay present. The custodial parent can sometimes become so wrapped up in their own emotions that the children are sidelined. Regardless of how you feel about each other, you both need to work together to cooperate with each other to make sure both parents have easy and stress-free contact and involvement with every aspect of your child(ren)’s life(s).
